November is Children's Grief Awareness Month

November is Children's Grief Awareness Month

Each November, we honor Children's Grief Awareness Month to spread awareness about the unique challenges grieving children face.

There are many myths about children's grief. The most harmfully, that children are less impacted by loss than adults and rarely experience grief. This couldn't be further from the truth.

For children, grief is both common and, when left unaddressed, devastating:

1 in 13 children in Washington will lose a parent or sibling before turning 18

A parent's death raises a child's risk of substance abuse disorder by 175%

Bereaved children are 2x more likely to experience significant challenges at home

Our Support Groups

Our Support Groups

Grief is a universal experience but because of stigma, we don’t talk about it universally. As a result, grief can feel profoundly isolating and lonely. At The Healing Center, we create space for people experiencing loss to share memories, learnings, challenges, and even laughter. Through open and candid conversations about grief, we build a community of profound connection and support.
Our Impact

Our Impact

When Kath McCormack, our founder, lost her husband at the age of 33, she envisioned a place where she and her children could receive support throughout their grief journey. Since our founding in 2000, we have grown exponentially. We’ve expanded our programming to serve more types of grief and have expanded our capacity tenfold to serve more than 400 clients each year.

We’ve stayed true to Kath’s original vision: to build a community of grieving people that provides on-going support through open, authentic conversations about grief.
